Happy New Year 2010 with Google GSM Smart Phone

December 31, 2009 By: Hema Manchanda

The famous search engine Google is going to launch its most awaiting smart phone in the new year .Assumptions are there that Google smart Phone Nexus One will be available in the market by 5th January 2010.

This phone will work on android platform known as android 2.1. The major telecom companies like Motorola and Samsung are already running their handsets on android.

Google Smart Phone will give a strong competition to Apple iPhone. Nexus One is likely to have a 3.7-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) touch screen AMOLED, which is a bright display technology, requests no backlighting for the device to function. Since there is no backlight, touch screen looks brighter. Nexus One features a 5-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi connectivity.

According to various mobile based sites, Google may sell the smart phone (estimated $530 USD) unlocked, thus not locking buyers in long-term contracts with carriers.

Cydia crashing December 28th

From thebigboss.org

There is a problem with a particular source this morning. Signs point to it being Zodttd’s repo sending data that Cydia has a problem with. This causes Cydia to go into a crashing loop.

You should NOT need to restore your firmware to fix this problem. Please have patience, a fix is being worked on. If the coming solutions do not help there is still the possibility that a restore may be needed.

Update #1: Some good advice and instructions in the comments below. You can also try the FIXES AND SUGGESTIONS HERE, as the problem is the same as it was then. You must remove the zodttd source list that is causing the problem.

Update #2: A quick fix for some (works only if you have apt7 installed)

-Log-in as root using MobileTerminal or SSH and run this command:
-apt-get update
-This will update your lists and then Cydia should work.

How to Add ProSwitcher Multitasking to Your iPhone

From www.iphoneincanada.ca

When the details of the Palm Pre were released, one of the biggest features was the issue of background apps and their webOS cards-style multitasking. All you had to do was just swipe between “cards” to change apps. Well, there the latest application to hit Cydia can now replicate the exact same thing–it’s called ProSwitcher–and it’s awesome (ProSwitcher requires a jailbroken iPhone).

ProSwitcher: Allowing Safari Pages-Like Multitasking to the iPhone

ProSwitcher was released in Cydia about a week ago, but recently came out with version 1.0. This means all the little kinks have been worked out and so far with my testing it’s been working flawlessly on my iPhone 3GS. The app is FREE via Cydia and I really hope Apple comes out with something like this in iPhone OS 4.0.

In combination with the Cydia app Backgrounder, ProSwitcher allows you to quickly manage your applications running in the background. It’s similar to managing your open Safari pages on the iPhone. Want to give it a try? Follow the tutorial below!

How to Add ProSwitcher to Your iPhone via Cydia

1. Jailbreak your iPhone using our guide.
2. Launch Cydia, search for Backgrounder and install it.

3. Launch Cydia, click on Manage–>Sources–>Edit–>Add–>enter the following URL: http://booleanmagic.com/repo –>Done

4. Go to Search. Enter “ProSwitcher” and install it.

5. Click Home and you will see the ProSwitcher icon. Tap it and you will be able to swipe quickly between open apps seamlessly! If you hold down your finger on an app within the ProSwitcher view, you can then swipe up to close it from view–just like the Palm Pre’s “cards” functionality. Pretty neat stuff!

6. To make a program run in the background with Backgrounder, configure your preferences on how to enable it. I’ve set mine to holding down the Power button to enable an app to run in the background. Once you do this, the selected app will now be shown within ProSwitcher. The small circular icon in the bottom left corner of app icons indicate they are running in the background via Backgrounder.

7. Edit changes to ProSwitcher via the control panel located via the iPhones Settings menu. From here, you can add rounded corners, add a Homescreen card, and even set how you want to activate ProSwitcher. I set it to activate by holding down my finger on the taskbar and voila–ProSwitcher appears!

ProSwitcher makes it extremely easy to multitask amongst open apps and shows just how amazing the 3rd party development community is. Get ProSwitcher on your iPhone today and let us know how it works for you!

New iPhone 4G coming to Verizon Wireless in 2010?

From QuickPWN:

According to Digitimes, OmniVision, the supplier of the 3.2 megapixel camera for the current iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS has secured 5-megapixel camera orders for the iPhone 4G . The iPhone 4th generation will launch in the second half of 2010. It will also contain a CDMA chip that allows it to be used on the Verizon Wireless network, if the rumors are true.

Apple launches new iPhones during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This year the WWDC conference is expected to be held during June, so that’s when we will find out whether or not there really is an iPhone 4G coming to Verizon. I’m hoping there will be one because I know a lot of people that would buy the iPhone if it came to Verizon.

Broke ur iPhone, no prob, fix it urself!!!

Recently I was faced with an iPhone that fell and the glass cracked. Phone still worked but was a mess!! Nor Apple or the service provider would cover this as it was physical damage to the device so I was left with 2 options: Send it away and pay to have it fixed or buy the parts and fix it myself. So begins my journey on my "do-it-urselfer iPhone repair!

I bought a lot of stuff and made some mistakes along the way but in the end I got 'er done! Ebay is a wonderfull source for replacement iPhone parts. I initially just bought the glass thinking I could go this route. I got a good deal, about $5 for glass, but the glass is actually adheard to the digitizer. You can fix it this way but it is a lengthy and dificult process and you risk damaging other parts. Here is a video showing this method. After watching this you can see, not the best way to do it.

See what I mean?! The above method not only takes way too long but is dangerous. As the glass cracks it does fly around, so I recommend eye protection!! I nearly crapped myself when he brings out the HUGE knife!! LOL! Want to lose a finger?!?!

The method I would recommend is to replace the entire assembly. That cost me between $30 and $40 on eBay. Below is the video supplied by directfix that I used as a guide. I recommend watching the entire video before doing anything to get a feel of what needs to be done then starting it from scratch, pausing along the way as you follow the steps. I'll include the reassembly video as well:

After watching these videos, you can see how easy it can be to repair the iPhone if the need arises. Just take your time and patience.

The parts and tools you'll need are:

A replacement digitizer

Replacement Adhesive Stickers

iPhone Opening Tools

A Heat Gun or Hairdryer

Good luck!!

Apple to launch tablet in spring 2010

From Yahoo! News:

Apple Inc is preparing to launch a tablet personal computer in late March or April, with manufacturer partners poised to roll out as many as 1 million units per month, according to an Oppenheimer research note.

The highly anticipated tablet is expected to pitch Apple into the digital book market popularized by Amazon.com's Kindle e-reader. Apple declined to comment.

Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner said the new tablet could boost Apple's earnings per share by 25 cents to 38 cents per quarter, assuming that it sells 1 million to 1.5 million units each quarter at an average price of $1,000 and a corporate average net income margin of 22 percent.

"Our checks into Apple's supply chain indicate that the manufacturing cogs for the tablet are creaking into action and should begin to hit a mass market stride in February," Reiner wrote.

"The February ramp schedule suggests a late March or April commercial release, since Apple will need to build at least 5-6 weeks of inventory before going live."

He said the tablet will have a 10.1-inch multitouch LCD screen similar to that of Apple's iPhone.

Apple has also approached book publishers to distribute their content electronically, and has offered them a revenue cut of 70 percent without requiring exclusivity, Reiner said.

He said that compares favorably to the Kindle's 50 percent deal, and that Kindle only offers a 70 percent cut to publishers that give Amazon exclusive rights.

"As innovative as it is, we believe the Kindle has disgruntled the publishing industry (book, newspaper, and magazine) by demanding exclusivity, disallowing advertising, and demanding a wolfish cut of revenue," Reiner wrote. "The tablet is set to change that."

Reiner forecast Apple's fiscal 2010 profit at $8.39 per share, compared with $6.29 in fiscal 2009, saying his estimate has not yet factored in the new device.

Shares of Apple were up 1.6 percent at $192.89 on Nasdaq.

The “My Account” iPhone App from Rogers / Fido

A few months ago, Rogers and Fido updated their websites to provide customers with the ability to view their wireless usage in almost real-time. The information was updated every four hours and gave users a great tool to track wireless usage.

To expand on that functionality and to set themselves apart from the other two Canadian iPhone carriers, Rogers and Fido have released new apps called “My Account”. The apps require no inputting of account credentials and simply pull everything from your iPhone network connection and SIM card.

Both Rogers and Fido each have their own version of the app and both apps provide customers with their wireless usage. Like the website, users can see minutes, text message and data usage right from their iPhone, which updates every 20 minutes instead of four hours as on the Rogers/Fido websites. The apps also allow customers to view their current balance and make a payment via credit card.

These apps do not support Corporate Paid/Reimbursed Accounts or Prepaid accounts. You also must be on 3G or EDGE for the apps to retrieve your account information. If you are on WiFi, you will have to turn WiFi off and connect to 3G or EDGE. This is annoying but hopefully a fix for this will come in the future.

Both of the Rogers My Account and Fido My Account apps are available on the iTunes App Store for free.

What happened to the Appulo.us Troll Bridge?

Since November 16th, 2009 Kayek introduced the much hated / loved Troll bridge at appulo.us. The largely popular site full of links to free iPhone and iPod applications cracked and posted by "App Pirates" around the world.

The Troll Bridge was introduced as a temporary solution to millions of hits bringing down the sites server. Instead of bringing the server down completly to correct the issue, Kayek introduced a question and answer "block" only giving access to users who submitted the correct answer. The idea was to slow down the hits directly on the server, allowing upgrades to take place without cutting the server off completely.

The question typically changed every few hours, but as of November 21st, 2009, the same question: "Kyek modified a Greasemonkey plugin to allow you to see if an Appulous IPA link was dead before you clicked it. The original plugin was the ________ Links Checker." with an answer of "cavern" has remained for the past 5 days. This brings several questions of our own to the table:

Is this the end of the Troll Bridge?
Will the question change?
Are the servers fixed?
Is Kayek on Vacation?

Only Kayek can answer these questions I supposed, but I'm certain there is anticipation throughout the "App Community" regarding this. Keep your eye on this blog for updates as we will be monitoring Appulo.us daily and will post new information as it comes in. Stay iTuned!!

App Pirates Upset Over Appulo.us Troll Bridge

Posted by Eric @ http://erictric.com/

It’s a story that was bound to happen. And if you own or know somebody with a jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone, chances are you’ve heard of Appulo.us. Essentially, Appulo.us is an underground black market for apps found in Apple’s iTunes Store. The only difference is that they’re completely free. Consider it app pirating.

As of recently, the powers that be at Appulo.us have taken a bold, bold move. They’ve essentially temporarily shut down free-for-all access to the app store as a result of server overload. The creator of the site, in order to prevent servers from crashing, has set up what he calls a “troll bridge,” and boy, has that got app pirates upset.

According to the creator, it seems to be working because many simply cannot find an answer to the riddle:

“Kyek modified a Greasemonkey plugin to allow you to see if an Appulous IPA link was dead before you clicked it. The original plugin was the ________ Links Checker.”

Now, if you know anything about the interwebs, you’ll know that Google will easily provide you with an answer to this — but if someone’s n00bish mindset somehow prevents them from using resources, then I suppose the troll bridge really does work.

Kyek (the creator of Appulo.us) is stressing that the troll bridge is only a temporary measure, until more servers are put in place to distribute the traffic load. He goes on to say that this could be days, or even weeks from now.
